The history of the Adler Asperg - 1846 to 1897

The Adler Asperg has been owned by the Ottenbacher family since 1897, but the history of the present hotel began as early as 1846. At that time, the master cooper Johann David Schwarz built the inn "Zum Adler" at the foot of the Asperg, after he had received the necessary official permission for it.

These were times of crisis, marked by famine and unrest. The prison on Hohenasperg held many political prisoners who were striving for a liberal and democratic system of government in Württemberg. From the prison on the mountain, the inmates could see the "Adler" sign when it shone in the sun.

The most important industry at that time was gypsum extraction. With the opening of the Ludwigsburg-Bietigheim railroad line in 1847, Asperg was connected to the rail service of the Württemberg state railroads. After that, new industries established themselves in the village, such as the first icebox factory in Württemberg or a steel foundry.

In 1897, Christian and Christiane Ottenbacher acquired the "Adler" in Asperg from the master butcher Friedrich Groß. Since then, the Adler has been owned by the family.
